To balance a crankshaft with a specialized flywheel/crankshaft balancing machine, all that is needed is a bobweight that clamps on the rod journal. The bobweight simulates the weight of (and must weigh exactly the same as) the piston and connecting rod assembly that is going to be used with the crankshaft .
The flywheel does not use a locating pin for alignment and will not initially seat against the crankshaft flange or spacer, if applicable, but will be pulled onto the crankshaft by the engine flywheel bolts. This procedure requires a three stage tightening process.
